Sometimes legends should stay buried in the past but there’s always a curious person that just has to be sure the legend is really true and then they will be satisfied. Then there is a chance that digging it up can have far greater consequences such as death but usually that thought doesn’t even enter the person or person’s minds. Even if the consequences can be fatal the curious feel that it’s worth the risk. This is where the fool hearty comes in and the story begins with Dr. Steven Brace. He had just received his PhD in Archeology and was feeling pretty cocky, and was ready to have his name alongside other famous archeologist’s before him in the history books. As for this doctor the only name he would be getting for himself would be his name listed in the obituaries. The good ole doctor started doing research into some legends and one that caught his eye was about pirates that had buried treasure on an island called Dead Man’s Island. Legend has it that the island had buried treasure that was buried somewhere on Dead Man’s Island in the Atlantic Ocean. A pirate ship that was sailing next to the island called The Ghost Dog’s captain decided it would be a good place to bury their treasure. So the ship dropped anchor and lowered a small boat into the water to take the captain and his three men into shore to bury their treasure. Once the pirate’s boat reached the shore they were able to find a small cave on the island to bury their treasure. Just as the treasure was buried they were greeted by natives of the island. Instead of a warm welcome by the natives they were met with spears and beheaded on the spot and left in the cave along with the buried treasure to rot.

From the corsairs of the Barbary Coast to Blackbeard to Jean Lafitte, pirates have been a part of every culture for centuries. Sometimes terrifying but always colorful characters, their history is as rich with controversy as it is with gold doubloons. The Everything Pirate Book is full of fascinating and little-known facts. Did you know that: Around 75 B.C., Julius Caesar was captured and ransomed by Cilician pirates. After he was released, it is said that he immediately hunted down his captors and killed them; Scottish seafarers and pirates were often nicknamed "red legs" because they wore kilts year round, and their bare legs were often wind- or sunburned; The image of the classic pirate, with flowing clothes, pegleg, eyepatch, parrot on his shoulder, and treasure map in his hand is primarily a result of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. With each passing decade, the legends surrounding pirates have grown to epic proportion, right down to their peglegs and buried treasure. The Everything Pirate Book will take you on a pirate tour from ancient times to their Golden Age to the modern-day search for buried treasure and reveals the truth behind the Hollywood hype.

Most histories of piracy start with the Caribbean in the 1500s and move on to the 'golden age' from the 1660s to the 1720s, with chapters on the Barbary corsairs, Chinese piracy and a brief look at modern piracy. These areas cannot be overlooked, but Pirates: A History is a comprehensive history of piracy, starting with the ancient and classical periods, then shifting to the Middle Ages and the Mediterranean, before treating the more traditional areas of the Caribbean, the 'golden age' of piracy in the west, the Barbary corsairs, Chinese and Eastern piracy, and finally modern piracy.
