The Secret Alliances Between History's Most Notorious Buccaneers and Colonial America Was classical piracy an earlier version of state-sponsored terrorism? Here's the story of how almost every well-known buccaneer of the “Golden Age of Piracy” enjoyed active sponsorship from England's governors in the American colonies- setting a pattern of official disobedience to the Crown that would ultimately contribute to the American push for independence. Relying on rare primary sources discovered in government archives in England, the Carolinas, Rhode Island, Jamaica, and elsewhere, Burgess combines true tales of derring-do with groundbreaking research in this fascinating history.

Download The Republic Of Pirates Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
An entrancing tale of piracy colored with gold, treachery and double-dealing (Portland Press Herald), Pulitzer Prize-finalist Colin Woodward's The Republic of Pirates is the historical biography of the exploits of infamous Caribbean buccaneers. In the early eighteenth century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates — former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves — this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote. They cut off trade routes, sacked slave ships, and severed Europe from its New World empires. For a brief, glorious period the Republic was a success as the pirates became heroes in the eyes of the people. Drawing on extensive research in the archives of Britain and the Americas, award-winning author Colin Woodard tells the dramatic untold story of the Pirate Republic that shook the very foundations of the British and Spanish Empires and fanned the democratic sentiments that would one day drive the American revolution.

Sometimes legends should stay buried in the past but there’s always a curious person that just has to be sure the legend is really true and then they will be satisfied. Then there is a chance that digging it up can have far greater consequences such as death but usually that thought doesn’t even enter the person or person’s minds. Even if the consequences can be fatal the curious feel that it’s worth the risk. This is where the fool hearty comes in and the story begins with Dr. Steven Brace. He had just received his PhD in Archeology and was feeling pretty cocky, and was ready to have his name alongside other famous archeologist’s before him in the history books. As for this doctor the only name he would be getting for himself would be his name listed in the obituaries. The good ole doctor started doing research into some legends and one that caught his eye was about pirates that had buried treasure on an island called Dead Man’s Island. Legend has it that the island had buried treasure that was buried somewhere on Dead Man’s Island in the Atlantic Ocean. A pirate ship that was sailing next to the island called The Ghost Dog’s captain decided it would be a good place to bury their treasure. So the ship dropped anchor and lowered a small boat into the water to take the captain and his three men into shore to bury their treasure. Once the pirate’s boat reached the shore they were able to find a small cave on the island to bury their treasure. Just as the treasure was buried they were greeted by natives of the island. Instead of a warm welcome by the natives they were met with spears and beheaded on the spot and left in the cave along with the buried treasure to rot.
