EXCERPT “Excuse me, officer,” said Mr Dumble. “You haven't seen a dog, about so high, brown, with sticky-uppy ears, have you?” “Are you kidding?” said one of the police officers. “That's the canine who caused this salmagundi of discombobulation,” “Pardon?” said Mr Dumble. “The canis domesticus who instigated this cornucopia of pandemonium.” “Eh?” said Mr Dumble. The police chief came over. “Don't mind Larry,” said the chief. “He always uses big words when he's traumatized. What's the problem, sir?” “Well, um, you see, the thing is, it's like this ...” said Mr Dumble.

Dog lovers of all stripes will enjoy the captivating stories of the author’s pets, and his thoughtful musings about them and their lives with him and his family. Convinced that his pooches have all been blessings from God, Sam further sees the Creator using them to graphically illustrate vital life principles. In Talking Dogs those principles emerge from a new perspective as you catch an over-the-shoulder view of Sam’s experiences with his beloved furry companions, and the wonderful Scriptural insights that have flowed from those relationships. “Every pet lover will enjoy this great book by my friend Sam Mason. It’s a page-turner filled with refreshing scriptural insights on living the life God wants each of us to enjoy.” - BOB GASS, author of the The Word for You Today “This book is full of great lessons about how the way dogs interact with us can teach us about our relationship with God. I really enjoyed reading it. I’m not aware of any other book like this. As a great dog lover all my life, I highly recommend Talking Dogs.” - JOHN P. MCTERNAN, author of As America Has Done to Israel “As I read Sam’s book I was reminded of a line from the greatest of all dog book authors — Albert Payson Terhune. Terhune said that humans were unlucky because they didn’t see their God until they died while a dog saw his god each time he looked into his master’s face. This book might just help you find a deeper relationship with God by getting to better know Him through the canines He sends into your life. I know that has been true for me.” - ACE COLLINS, best-selling author

Every dog owner knows intuitively that there's something special about the high degree of mutual understanding and empathy that exists between humans and their proverbial best friends. Now, an internationally renowned Hungarian ethologist (a specialist in the scientific study of animal behavior) traces the roots of this unique relationship back to the unusual circumstances in which the two species co-evolved over many millennia. Drawing in part on close observations of his own two pet dogs, Flip and Jerry, the author argues that the longstanding alliance of dogs and humans arose from behavioral traits present in the original wolves from which all modern dogs are descended. Wolves, like humans, are highly intelligent social predators, with well-developed cooperative problem-solving and communications skills, giving them distinct advantages in their developing relations with humans. These basic intellectual skills were refined and enhanced over tens of thousands of years, resulting in the enormously varied "artificial animals" we see today. Although the book's specific focus is on dogs, it ranges far afield to discuss in an easy-going, accessible style recent experimental and theoretical work on the behavior of other animals, and especially on their interactions with humans. A highly personal work, If Dogs Could Talk makes the case that the social and emotional bonds between dogs and humans are indeed special, and that they ought to form the basis for our treatment of dogs. Moreover, the author concludes, by closely observing the cognitive behavior of dogs, we can also learn a good deal about how the human mind works.

When Homo sapiens sapiens met Canis lupus lupus millennia ago, the result was Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog. Since that fateful encounter, the dog has become, arguably, humankind’s greatest creation. The domestic dog is the most widely distributed species (other than ourselves) in the world, being found virtually wherever people live, and is also the most diversified of species, with literally hundreds of recognized breeds. While we have shaped the dog, it, too, has helped shape human history in innumerable ways. Our Debt to the Dog is a critical historical and cross-cultural examination, through the use of case studies, of this most improbable 15,000-year relationship and an exploration of how this relationship shaped the history of the world. It is also very much an apology to the dog because over the course of the partnership horrific acts were perpetrated against it intentionally and otherwise. Our Debt to the Dog enriches our understanding of the dog and extends our appreciation for the profound complexity of past and present human-canine relationships and the dog’s contributions to our lives and our world.
